Hypnotherapy Income
What sort of income can you expect to earn as a hypnotherapist?
It’s a natural question to ask and the answer is really open-ended.
At the moment I work 3 days a week on average and that generates somewhere in the region of £6000 – £8000 per month for me, less expenses.
(But I should point out that is not typical – and I cannot promise you will earn the same).
Here are a couple of hypothetical cases that may help you calculate what you can expect to earn in the first 1-2 years.
Case 1 – The trainee hypnotherapist is already in full-time employment and wishes to set up a Hypnotherapy Practice in their spare time, maintaining their day job initially.
If all goes well, they may eventually reduce their job hours and dedicate more time to the Hypnotherapy Practice.
To begin with, they may only be able to work evenings and weekends.
Let’s say they work one evening a week, and see 3 clients, and one day at the weekend, also seeing 3 clients.
This gives them 6 client hours a week (on top of their day job).
I personally believe that anyone providing the Hypnotherapy I am going to teach should be charging at the very absolute minimum, £50 an hour, but really should be in the £85+ an hour in local areas, with a higher fee in major cities. (London I currently charge £130 per hour).
6 clients a week in your spare time @ £50 = £300 per week = £1200 per month (assuming 4 week month).
6 clients a week in your spare time @ £85 = £510 per week = £2040 per month (assuming 4 week month).
6 clients a week in your spare time is easily achievable if you ‘put your mind to it’ and do the right things (which I’ll be teaching on the course). Enthusiastic people can achieve this within 3 – 6 months – others it will take longer.
Case 2 – The trainee hypnotherapist is looking for a change of career and wishes to set up a Full-Time Successful Hypnotherapy Practice.
Month 1 -3 – This will be getting those initial clients in and starting to build a name for yourself.
Let’s say after 3 months you have a regular 5 clients a week, spread over 1 or 2 days.
5 @ £85 = £425 per week = £1700 per month after 3 months.
Month 3 – 6 – With determination and work, you are generating more enquiries, your existing clients are starting to refer and you are starting to get into the flow.
By the end of 6 months, you are now seeing an average of 9 clients a week, 3 clients a day spread over 3 days.
9 @ £85 = £765 per week = £3060 per month.
Months 6 – 12 – Continued expansion of your practice means you are now working 4 days a week, seeing 4 people a day.
16 @ £85 = £1360 per week – £5440 per month.
Months 12 -24 – Increasing your referral rate, maintaining steady stream of clients, adding in some courses and group sessions here and there.
20 @ £85 – £1700 per week = £6800 per month.
Self-Hypnosis Relaxation Course – 10 people paying £45? = £450
Total per month = £6800 + £450 = £7350
I should point out this is not easy BUT it is entirely possible for anyone who literally puts their mind to it (you have to use the tools of your trade on yourself!!)
When I first started I was seeing 10 clients a week within a few months and was up to 20 – 25 clients a week within about 6 months – so the figures above are quite conservative compared to my own experience.
BUT – I am the type of person who ‘goes for it!’
YOU could do much, much better – or work up much more gradually – it is entirely up to you.
Many people are happy seeing 2 or 3 clients a week in their spare time, to give them an interest and little extra pocket money.
Others want 30 clients a week plus run courses and seminars, make recordings, write books and so on.
There are business expenses of course, but these can vary greatly as well.
If you work from home, your only expense will probably be marketing and advertising; if you work from a clinic, there will be room rent, reception, telephone etc as well as the advertising costs.
Essentially, it is up to you!
I’ve been self-employed as a hypnotherapist for over 20 years.
At the moment I have two local clinics, which I run on Tuesday morning and Tuesday afternoon.
I work two days in London Harley Street.
The rest of the time is my own where I work on courses, writing, recording and admin stuff.
Have a think about how YOU would design YOUR working life?
What would be YOUR ideal?
Let me know what it is, and I’ll tell you what I think you need do to get there, and how long it will take.
Hope you found this helpful.

Hi I trained as an Hypnotherapist 15 years ago and practiced in my back bedroom for approximately 2 yrs. Unfortunately I had to give it up for personal reasons. I helped numerous people mainly with pycho-analysis getting to the root causes. I have a diploma but everything else like insurance lapsed. Would like to practice again if possible, Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi Glenn,
Just start!
Get insurance, make a simple website and do a simple promotion or advert to get that first client. Use income from that to do more advertising. It’s as simple as that really.
Just start 🙂
